Eurovignette
In the European transport sector, there are several schemes to regulate and tax the use of infrastructure by heavy vehicles. One of these is the Eurovignette, a system designed for heavy trucks using highways in specific countries.

What is the Eurovignette?
The Eurovignette is a digital tax for heavy trucks with a maximum authorized mass of 12,000 kilograms or more using freeways in certain European countries. It serves as proof that the Heavy Motor Vehicle Tax (BZM) has been paid, which is similar to a form of toll collection. The Eurovignette is mandatory in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark and Sweden.
For innovative transportation solutions such as LHVs (Long and Heavy Trucks). apply similar rules, but they may also have specific exemptions or restrictions, depending on the legislation.
How does the Eurovignette work?
Since October 2008, the Eurovignette has been fully digitized. Transporters can purchase the vignette online via the Eurovignettes Portal. Upon purchase, data such as the vehicle's registration number, number of axles and emission class are recorded. After payment, the vignette is electronically linked to the vehicle, eliminating the need for physical documents. Enforcement agencies can verify compliance with the payment obligation through license plate checks.
Where is the Eurovignette valid?
The Eurovignette is valid in the following countries:
- Netherlands
- Luxembourg
- Denmark
- Sweden
This means that trucks traveling on freeways in these countries are required to have a valid Eurovignette. Other European countries may have different toll or tax regulations in place.

Exemptions
Not all heavy vehicles are required to have a Eurovignette. There are specific exemptions, for example for:
- Government Vehicles with a military license plate
- Police and fire department vehicles
- Vehicles that are part of the company's stock From authorized dealers or repair shops
For a complete list of exemptions, please refer to the information from the Internal Revenue Service consulting.
Enforcement and fines
Failure to have a valid Eurovignette when using the freeways in participating countries can result in substantial fines. Enforcement takes place through automatic license plate checks and physical checks by enforcement agencies. It is therefore essential that transporters ensure that their Eurovignette is up-to-date and matches the vehicle's specifications.
